Pet hotel full this summer? Here's how to find reliable care

Suitcases are packed, cars are loaded, passports are dusted off. But if you have a dog, cat or rabbit, you know: the real holiday prep involves more than just booking a flight. Because what do you do with your furry companion when you're off for a few weeks?

If you're hoping to book a spot in a pet boarding facility this summer, you’re probably too late. A recent survey by NU.nl revealed that pet hotels across the Netherlands are completely full—some even booked well beyond the summer. Waiting lists are growing, phones are ringing non-stop, and some places require reservations as early as Christmas for the next summer holiday.

More travelling, more demand

Over the past few years, there’s been a clear trend: people are going on holiday more often and for longer. That means a growing need for quality pet care. And it's not just the summer that's a challenge. The same goes for spring break, autumn holidays, and even regular weekends—finding a good spot is becoming increasingly difficult.

At the same time, the number of pet boarding facilities has shrunk. During the pandemic, many small-scale pet hotels closed down or went bankrupt. Few new ones have opened in their place. The Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals is sounding the alarm: the number of pets in need of care is rising, while available spots are disappearing.

Higher expectations

There’s another reason for the current pressure: during the pandemic, many people adopted a pet. And today’s pet parents are more likely than ever to see their animal as a true member of the family. So of course, they’re not just looking for any random place to leave their dog or cat.

That’s exactly what we see at Pawshake, a platform where pet owners can find a personal pet sitter. Paulien, Community Manager at Pawshake, explains:
“Pet owners want a place where their animal feels at ease. Not somewhere where they sit in a kennel all day. They want someone who actually spends time with their pet. Preferably someone who understands their pet’s quirks—like a cat that only eats wet food after it’s been microwaved for exactly ten seconds. Or a dog who insists on snuggling on the couch in the evening. In short: people aren't looking for generic care, but for a personal, loving home away from home.”

The rise of personalized pet care

Many pet parents are choosing this kind of care, and it shows at Pawshake. The number of bookings has steadily increased since the pandemic dip, when people weren’t travelling but were bringing pets into their homes. Since then, it’s become easier than ever to find a sitter online.

“Demand peaks during school holidays, especially summer,” Paulien says. “While traditional pet hotels are often fully booked months in advance, Pawshake often still has availability. Sometimes last-minute, but many sitters and pet parents plan ahead too. But the big difference with kennels is: it’s personal. You choose a sitter who fits your pet. Someone with a big garden, someone experienced with elderly cats, or someone who can keep up with an energetic young pup.”

Why pet parents choose Pawshake:

  • Cats can stay in their own home with one or two daily visits from a sitter.

  • Dogs stay in a cosy home environment with someone who really has time for them.

  • You agree on everything upfront: from medical needs to cuddle time.

  • Everything goes through the app, so you can stay in touch and receive updates easily.

  • Your pet is insured during the booking, including vet costs.

According to Paulien, personalised care isn’t necessarily better than a kennel: “It’s just a matter of preference. Many Pawshake sitters are also professionals.” But what really makes the difference is the homey feel:
“You’re not depending on your neighbours or in-laws. Friends and family may help you out for free, but you can’t really expect too much of them. A Pawshake sitter is in it with heart and soul.”

Holiday at your place?

So Pawshake means: a vacation for you and your pet. But what if you're staying home this summer?

“If you love animals and want to earn a bit of extra income, you can also become a sitter yourself through Pawshake,” Paulien says.“We’re always looking for great sitters. You’ll help fellow pet owners enjoy their holiday, and you get a cuddly guest or a fun house-sitting gig in return.”

A win-win-win situation.
